All the children are not alike. They have their
own ability. The learning does not take place with single strategy. Different
students have different ways of learning. Therefore, inclusion of variety of
teaching strategy is very important to bring overall success of the children.
One unavoidable strategy is use of ICT in the classroom which has profound
impact on children’s learning. It has become a key tool for today’s world. Different
ability of child learns better through ICT.
This time I have used MOBILES in teaching the concept of ‘Reptiles’ in
class VI Science on 4th September, 4th period. With the
prior permission from the school authority and the permission from the parents
I asked children to bring a mobile for the lesson. I downloaded all the required materials
beforehand and shared via ‘SHARE IT.’ I began the lesson by talking on ‘Classification
of Animals.’ I reminded that ‘Animals’ can be classified in to five. Animals with hair on their bodies (mammals),
dry scales (reptiles), feathers (birds), animals living in water (aquatic
animals) and animals who spend most of the time in water (amphibians).
I told them to have a look on those animals in
their mobile that I have shared through ‘SHARE IT.’ After having observed the pictures, I asked
the question; how these animals are different from each other? They were able
to tell differences confidently. This is one indication that use of ICT in
teaching provides variety in student’s learning. Even the low achiever could
manage to reach the other bank of the river.
In the
lesson development, I told them to have a look at the pictures of reptiles in
their phones and note down some important features of the animals. They were so
curious to move ahead with the activities. I felt it was play and learn.
Looking at the pictures, they were able to expressed their feeling with the
different real pictures and make their thinking come to reality. They did the job
perfectly as instructed. After having noted down the features of the reptiles,
I instructed them to ‘define reptiles, write some examples and characteristics
of reptiles.’ All most all the students wrote it correctly which I never
experienced before. The lesson was very inspiring and effective. I was totally satisfied
and driven to move further as it has immense benefit especially for low
achiever students. Use of ICT in delivering lesson breaks the gap. Actually, they are not low achiever. The
teaching strategy used by teachers were not suited to them. Therefore, I am
much convinced that, I will continue to use ICT, mobiles, projector as main
teaching tools henceforth.
Although, use of mobiles in teaching provides
opportunity to explore in depth. We can make all the information accessible
because phones are easily manageable. However, there were some hitches I came
across while carrying out the activities using mobile phones in the classroom. Most
of the students have their own mobile at home. They are exposed to various
gadgets and apps in the mobile. If we are not careful, it might mislead our
teaching. So, we need to provide clear instructions before they handle the
mobile in the class. Other drawback I observed was risk of losing their mobile.
I have to caution every now and then to avoid such havoc. So, in
the next, I am planning to collect the mobiles before the morning assembly,
upload all the information and use it during teaching. Again, collect it after
the session and handover it in the evening when they leave home.
My overall impression on use of mobiles in teaching and learning: Children were excited
to use the mobiles since it was first time happening in the classroom. The
serious discussion was seen among the group members. Teaching become easier as
we can make information accessible and it is manageable. I found it very
effective in teaching and learning. So,
I suggest my colleagues to give a try where there are no ICT facilities.
Mobiles are easily manageable.

Dear all
ReplyDeleteI would like to request all to make necessary comments to strengthen my ICT knowledge. Your comments and suggestions are highly respected for the betterment of my profession.
With regards
Choney Dorji.
It is a best strategy if all parents help them to afford mibile. I personally feel that it would be best and good strategy to enhance the children's learning. So,I would try later in one of the then lessons. Great job.
ReplyDeleteYour work done has been shown as the best by the students performance and you are more satisfied than you expected. To me your work done is clear but as a suggestion I you could have upload in the voice chat group instead of asking them tobring the gadget in the school. Yes it has some advantages when children bring in the schoolas they know about the belonging as well as correct usage at right time but there will be more disadvantages as stated by you.
ReplyDeleteIf uploaded in voice chat group their parents will also get opportunities to see what they are actually learning or going to learn in the comming days. Its Just my suggestions
Thanks
Thank you sir. I have uploaded all the materials that happened in the classroom for authentication la.
DeleteAa said "every advantages are follow by disadvantages" there will be disadvantages when children are asked to bring phones to school.but i feel that we can do it as you did sometimes as a change .keep up sir
ReplyDeleteTo include variation in lesson I asked them to bring phones after seeking permission from school authority and parents concern. Now am planning to use google classroom teaching. In this we can invite the school authority, parents of concern students. They can view the students work as well as teachers'work.
DeleteWow!!! I am very glad to read your post. I reread it for several times becuase I found your ideas to teach science is amazing. I have never thought before than your post to use mobile phone to teach my students. I am sure I will give a try atleast for once and see how my students feel about my teaching using mobile phones. Keep going sir
ReplyDeleteVery interesting lesson you have used during your teaching. I hope you had strict to only one topic that is reptile mo. That's good idea. We must focus only one topic as per our period.
ReplyDeleteI had good time going through your reflection. You have done a nice lesson where students have learnt lot out of your ict lesson. Bravo..!
ReplyDeleteNice to go through your reflection, you made best used of the available material, good work, keep it up.
ReplyDeleteJust my findings la. I did it to have variation in my lesson despite my risk. Thank you la.
DeleteGood idea, but I am skeptic that it would be difficult to collect mobile phones at times even after informing the concerned personnels.
ReplyDeleteYes, this idea would serve the purpose in the places where there no ICT facilities.
It was a great idea but I am afraid that how students could give care to their mobile phones is my concern. However if the teacher takes care, that is fine.It was just my thought sirji...
ReplyDeleteDear sir,
ReplyDeleteIt was a good ideas to share point with students through mobiles phones.keep using it to have wonderful lesson.
Thank you
It is a great idea to use mobiles sometimes in the lesson because through mobile they can understand different ways in learning the concept. keep it up sir. i will also try your strategy.
ReplyDeleteWow, it was a great idea and you lesson was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteEven I have been using mobile phones to teach my children in English class, it helps a lot.
Great sir....
Well reflected lesson... Even i used mobile phones as teaching learning process but I used only one phone for whole class by taking turn. And asked them to browse in their parents phone as home work which also works
ReplyDeleteIts worth sharing, through your lesson, children will also explore themselves at home and enhanced their learning.
ReplyDeleteWork done by you has been shown as the best by the students performance which made you more satisfied than expected. To me your work done is clear but as a suggestioN it will be better if you have uploaded in the voice chat group instead of asking them to bring the gadget in the school.
You have worked well but as a suggestion if you could have created a WeChat group and uploaded in that group instead of asking them to bring the gadget in the school. Bringing gadgets like mobile phone to the school is against the school policy, so it seems not right to exhibit wrong doing to the students.Just my thoughts. But I agree with you sir that using smart phones in the classroom has lots of advantages.
ReplyDeleteYes i agree with you la. There are many risk factors la. Now I am planning to create google classroom teaching. In this, there parents will be involve. Through google classroom account, they can do their work in any work places.
DeleteThe use of mobile is the simplest yet the most handy one. Keep going sir.
ReplyDeleteIts worth sharing. You have created an opportunity to children to explore themselves at home and enhanced their learning. It serve the purposes of using ICT and keep children engage in learning.
ReplyDeleteWow sir
ReplyDeleteYour lesson opened my eyes.
I should really try the way you did the next time .
Great job.
Thank you madam. I am really inspired. Looking forward to do things in different way hereafter.
DeleteIt was your great initiatives and I would recommend you to use more i the future too. As you have mentioned in your write up that todays learner does better with ICT rather than our traditional method. However disadvantages are also associated with advantages. From my point I forsee that your children might miss you the phone unless you switch off the data...other wise they might engross in other social net work such as we chat...face book etc. You have shared the information/resources via share it and I do hope that you might have asked your children to turn off data. Now a days most of our children ate exposed to social media at home and they might be engaged in others. Over all I felt it was interesting lesson.
ReplyDeleteIf use it in a meaningful way, it has lost of merits. On other hand, there are multiples of demerits if we are carefree. Thank you for your concern sir. I will take it to consideration la. To avoid such chaos, I collected the mobiles as soon as they arrived to the school and handed over only during the teaching periods. After the teaching periods, again I collected from them and handed over to them in the evening only. It really works well la.
ReplyDeleteDear folklore,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sparing your valuable time for going through my post. I have learned so many things from your feedback. I will take all these into account and make necessary improvement in the future la. Your comments and suggestions are highly respected la. I look forward for more comments to strengthen my career. Thank you every one.
Wow very good ideas.I really liked it and found very appropriate for learning by using mobile in the classroom.keep it up sir.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea sir, i ll also try it.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to make use of mobile meaningfully.
ReplyDeleteIts a great idea you have come up with the integration of ICT in your lesson and noticed many benefits through integration of ICT as compared without integration of ICT.Please, keep on
ReplyDeleteexploring more ideas in future too.
Wow, great work displaced sir. You have worked well, if you could have created a We-Chat group and uploaded in that group your work load would have been easier and faster too, just a suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI agree and support you sir towards your dedicative hard work sir.
Keep it up.
ICT is very useful tool for teaching and makes teaching realistic. The way you have used ICT in your teaching is relevant and looks students reallly enjoyed the lesson.
